Ocellated Turkey: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "“(Meleagris ocellata) is a species of turkey residing primarily in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, as well as in parts of Belize and Guatemala. A relative of the North American wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), it was sometimes previously considered in a genus of its own (Agriocharis), but the differences between the two turkeys are currently considered too small to justify generic segregation. It is a relatively large bird, at around 70–122 cm (28–48 in) long and an average weight of 3 kg (6.6 lb) in females and 5 kg (11 lb) in males.“ Wikipedia" says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022. Bison bison: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "Over 40 million American bison (Bison bison) once roamed the plains and grasslands from Mexico to central Canada, shaping the landscape with their migrations, grazing patterns, and behavior. By the 1870s, their populations had been decimated by westward expansion and over-hunting. An 1889 survey published by Hornaday, who would go on to become the first director of the Bronx Zoo, showed that approximately 1,000 bison remained in North America. Established originally as the New York Zoological Society (NYZS) in 1895, In 1905, the NYZS founded the American Bison Society (ABS) to help save bison from extinction. The Bronx Zoo sheltered bison to recover their numbers and then transported these bison back to their historical range in the west in order to repopulate bison herds that are still seen today." says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022.
