Bison bison: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "Over 40 million American bison (Bison bison) once roamed the plains and grasslands from Mexico to central Canada, shaping the landscape with their migrations, grazing patterns, and behavior. By the 1870s, their populations had been decimated by westward expansion and over-hunting. An 1889 survey published by Hornaday, who would go on to become the first director of the Bronx Zoo, showed that approximately 1,000 bison remained in North America. Established originally as the New York Zoological Society (NYZS) in 1895, In 1905, the NYZS founded the American Bison Society (ABS) to help save bison from extinction. The Bronx Zoo sheltered bison to recover their numbers and then transported these bison back to their historical range in the west in order to repopulate bison herds that are still seen today." says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022. Victoria Crowned Pigeon: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "The Victoria crowned pigeon is a large, bluish-grey pigeon with elegant blue lace-like crests, maroon breast, and red eyes. It is part of a genus (Goura) of four unique, very large, ground-dwelling pigeons native to the New Guinea region. The bird may be easily recognized by the unique white tips on its crests and by its deep 'whooping' sounds made while calling." says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022. Rhyticeros cassidix: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "“IN THE CANOPIES of Indonesia you are likely to find a unique and breathtaking species, the knobbed hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix). Also known as the Sulawesi wrinkled hornbill, this bird gets its name from the red knob or casque at the top of its bill that is detailed with wrinkles or ridges. This hollow structure made of keratin that adorns the top of the bird’s bill can be used for a number of tactics that shape the bird’s biology. Casques can add strength to the bird’s bill and be used as a tool for digging in the dirt or chiseling into tree bark. They can also be used as sound chambers or carriers of vocalizations. Hornbills are omnivorous birds surviving on a diet that is made up of fruits, insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Hornbills play an important role in seed dispersal in our environment. They keep the cycle of the forest growing and evolving with all the fruit they consume each day.” Wildlife Conservation Society" says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022. Elaphurus: Animal in habitat Zoo in the NatureSpots App "The Père David's deer, also known as the milu or elaphure, is a species of deer native to the river valleys of China. It grazes mainly on grass and aquatic plants. Today, Père David’s deer exist only in human care. They roam in deer parks, ranches, zoos, and have returned to China to live in reserves. The species is classified as Extinct in the Wild by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Bronx Zoo has maintained a herd of Père David Deer since 1946 , has produced 175+ offspring over the years. The species is bred at the Bronx Zoo as part of the Species Survival Program (SSP), a cooperative breeding program designed to enhance the genetic viability of animal populations in zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)." says Chris Slattery in habitat Zoo on 13.09.2022.
